5th annual London Greek Film Festival Dynamic and independent, creative and nostalgic and not leastrefreshed every year, the London Greek Film Festival opens its curtains to the London cinema lovers. This year the festival will be held from the 8 to 18 October. During that time, more than 45 films will be screened at the Westbourne Studios (242 Acklam Road, London W10 5JJ) close to Portobello in west London. This year’s films include feature fiction films, documentaries, short films, experimental films and video art. Selected short and feature scripts will also be presented.As ever dedicated to Modern Greek filmmakers and moving image artists from all over the world, but also to international filmmakers whose work is related to Greece, the London Greek Film Festival imposes through the screenings and the accompanying activities a strong Greek cultural presence in the British metropolis. At the same time it regularly bridges today with the past through special tributes, it lays down online and other bases for the promotion of Greek culture and Greek cinema, builds collaborations and states the obvious: we are here, we are creative and we believe in a better tomorrow.
The festival kicks off on 8 October at Westbourne Studios with a photo exhibition on the subject “Olympic Flame: the Flame of Peace”, in association with the Museum of ERT (Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation). The exhibition presents for a first time in exhibition, 18 rare photographs by photojournalist Aristotelis Sarrikostas, dating from 1967 to 1996. On the same day three special documentary screenings will take place: ‘The Olympic Games in Antiquity’ directed by Markos Holevas (2004), ‘Monogram – Nikiforos Vrettakos’ directed by Nikos Paligiannopoulos (1982, from the ERT archives), and ‘Paraskinio – Georgios Papanikolaou Pap Test’ directed by Lefteris Xanthopoulos (2008, also from the ERT archives). The festival will draw to an end on 18 October with the ‘Odysseus Awards’ evening ceremony, where the best films of the festival in each category will be presented with their prizes. During the festival the spectators can also attend on 13 October an open workshop entitled ‘Greek Film Network: an opportunity for film business networking from the London Greek Film Festival’. On 14 October, Mythopolis music scene (277 City Road, London EC1V 1LA) will host a party with the very best of Greek music.
